Legacy System Extension Warning

As spring rolls around, we have gotten more updates to macOS 26. You may have noticed in the latest update a warning notice after your machine has installed the update and rebooted. That warning update is a notice from Apple basically saying that in a future update of macOS, very likely the update that happens in September 2027, some developer extensions will no longer work. Typically these are older extensions that you may not even use any longer. Each time you get a notice, it will tell you who the developer of that extension was. Sometimes it may list a developer. You’re well aware of and that you use like HP but other times it will list a developer that you’re not even familiar with it all. That does not mean that anything’s been installed on your machine that shouldn’t be there. It just means something was installed on macOS sometime in the past that will no longer work beginning in September 2027.

These at this point are just warnings. If the developer listed in the pop-up message is a developer you use for product on your machine, like your Hewlett Packard, Canon, or Epson, and you still use a printer from that brand, it just means that sometime before September 2027 you’ll have to update that software. When that software is available it may update itself or it may be something that you have to go to their website and download. But basically you’ve got a long time before you need to worry about that. So just make a note of these messages as you see them, and unfortunately, they continue to reappear with nearly every update, but don’t worry about them at this point. This is just Apple being proactive to allow developers enough time to update their software without leaving people with problems when Apple updates its own software.
